Position Summary

TheContract and Grant Accounting (CGA) department has an opportunity for anexperienced on-call Accountant 3. CGA is under the direction of theFinancial Services Division (FSD) and also reports to the office of the VicePresident for Research (OVPR). Our mission is to provide the Universityof New Mexico's research community with professional expertise and qualitycustomer service in the management of externally sponsored funding. Thisdepartment interprets and implements UNM policies related to grants andcontracts, reviews and interprets policies of outside private and governmentalfunding agencies, ensures compliance with Federal regulations, generatesregular fiscal reports on sponsored programs, oversees revenue collections andmanagement through timely invoicing and follow-up with sponsors as needed,ensures expenditures adhere to private and governmental regulations andguidelines, submits periodic reports as required by various funding agencies,supports management with audit requests, and develops training, reports, anddocumentation regarding fiscal controls for departments and core offices.

Contract & GrantAccounting seeks an individual who has strong professional accounting andsponsored research experience. The preferred candidate will haveexperience as a fiscal monitor and be a self-starter with strong interpersonalskills, excellent organizational skills, the ability to establish prioritiesand complete projects on time, an eye for detail and the ability to effectivelyorganize, coordinate and complete a wide range of concurrent activities. Stronganalytical and problem-solving skills, excellent verbal and written communicationskills, excellent customer service skills, flexibility, and the ability to workindependently are a must. In addition, this individual must have the ability tocompile, analyze, interpret, and present complex financial reports, statements,and/or projections. Knowledge of the principles, processes, and standards forfinancial analysis and reporting as related to a research institution arerequired.

Responsibilities ofthis position include but are not limited to setting up new sponsored projectsin our accounting system, timely review and approval of departmentaltransactions on sponsored projects, revenue management with timely and accuratepreparation and submission of monthly invoices to sponsors, and closingawards in a timely fashion at the conclusion of a sponsored project period ofperformance with submission of final closeout documents to agencies by theapplicable due dates.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Certifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or BBA with Accounting emphasis


Experience

  • Experience with research administration, preferably as a fiscal monitor
  • Experience working with UNM financial programs such as MyReports and Banner

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Proficiencies
  • Effective time management skills to prioritize multiple ongoing work tasks to meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively at different levels of organization, both orally and in writing
  • Effective research and analytical skills to investigate discrepancies or questions
  • Proficient in MS Excel to analyze/interpret financial data and prepare reports
  • Ability to learn, understand, and apply University, Federal, State, and Agency policies and terms & conditions
