Robert Half Monterey has partnered with a local government entity to help fill a long-term contracted Payroll Accountant need. The role is great for a seasoned professional seeking public sector experience open to working for a set duration of time or a more junior candidate that needs additional payroll experience to help catapult themselves into a long career in accounting/payroll. The job will have medical benefits and sick pay through Robert Half during the contracted/temporary duration which is set for 4-6 months. Some of the job duties are below.

Responsibilities:
  • Implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing and accounting systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Facilitates audits by providing records and documentation to auditors.
  • Identifies and recommends updates to payroll accounting software, systems, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Extensive knowledge of payroll functions including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficient with payroll software.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field preferred.
  • At least three to five years of related experience preferred.
